    Robotic Radical Prostatectomy

What is a Robotic Radical Prostatectomy?

It is a minimally invasive surgery performed to remove the entire prostate using robotic surgical equipment. It is performed with advanced control, clear vision, and accuracy. Our top surgeons can operate through small incisions rather than big cuts, resulting in reduced recovery time, fewer complications, and short hospital stays. Robotic Radical Prostatectomy is a highly advanced procedure available at Apollo Hospitals, Karnataka.

Who needs a Robotic Radical Prostatectomy?

Generally, prostatectomy is performed to treat localised prostate cancer. It can be done alone or in conjunction with chemotherapy, hormone therapy, or radiation.

The surgeon will decide the course of surgery that will be right for the concerned patient. Men with severe urinary symptoms and enlarged prostate glands (BPH -Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia) are usually recommended to undergo a simple prostatectomy. In a simple prostatectomy, the entire prostate is not removed.

Robotic radical prostatectomy gives the best results when your prostate cancer is in stage T1 or T2. It means that the cancer is confined to the prostate and has not spread to other organs. However, many patients have also benefited from radical prostatectomy at later stages of cancer. Our best surgeons integrate modern techniques in the field & highly advanced tools & machines to offer the best possible treatment.

How can you prepare for the surgery?

The doctors will provide you with specific information on preparing for the surgery. Every patient is unique, with different requirements and conditions. Your surgical process and experience are decided accordingly.

However, there are some common steps that every patient should follow, including certain medication routines, diet plans, etc.

Here are some things that you must follow or discuss with your doctor before the surgery:

Medications: Inform your doctor about any medications or supplements you take. It is important, especially if you take blood-thinning medications like clopidogrel, warfarin, and over-the-counter painkillers. These medications can increase the risk of excessive bleeding before the surgery.

Allergies and Reactions: Inform the concerned doctor about any allergy that you have with any medicine.

Bowel prep before surgery: You might be given an enema kit to clear your bowels before the procedure.

Fasting: The surgeon might ask you to keep a fast after midnight. You will be given some medicines on the morning of the surgery day of your surgery.

Clothing and Jewellery: Make sure not to wear dentures, contact lenses, jewellery, and eyeglasses to the surgery.

Physical Activities: Your physical activities will be restricted for a few weeks after the surgery. Hence, you need to plan your schedule accordingly before the surgery.

    What happens during the surgery?

You will be given general anaesthesia so that you will not be conscious during the surgery. The doctor will give antibiotic injections to avoid infections due to the surgery. The surgeon will make five small incisions in your lower abdomen. Robotically controlled cameras and other equipment will be passed through these incisions.

The surgeon will sit at a small distance from your operation area at a remote control console to precisely control the motion of the robotic arms and monitor using the camera. The motion control is done using two hands and finger control devices. The console provides a magnified 3D view of the area to be operated on that provides the concerned surgeon with the required precision to perform the surgery. An important advantage of the Robotic Radical Prostatectomy is that it enables a nerve-sparing technique that preserves sexual potency and continence in the patient.

What can you expect after the surgery?

You can expect the following after the surgery:

    • Your doctor might give you prescription pain pills after the IV is removed.
    • You will need to follow some exercises to move your legs and lower body while you are in bed.
    • If your doctor feels you can return home the next day after the pelvic drain is taken out. You will have to return a few times to remove other staples.
    • Full recovery of the erectile function can take up to 18 months.
    • Do not resume your normal activities immediately after the surgery. You must resume the activities gradually over 3-4 weeks.

What are the benefits of Robotic Radical Prostatectomy?

Compared to traditional open surgery, the Robotic Radical Prostatectomy offers the following benefits:

    • Shorter hospital stays
    • Faster recovery
    • Less pain
    • Reduced tissue trauma
    • Less blood loss

What are the risks associated with Robotic Radical Prostatectomy?

The following are the potential risks associated with Robotic Radical Prostatectomy:

    • Adjacent organ/tissue damage
    • Bleeding
    • Infection at the surgical site
    • Urinary incontinence
    • Formation of cysts containing lymph
